When I ask myself this, I can't answer it today. The number is always changing, because it's a state of mind, not a number. Despite my closet getting smaller I haven't reached that point of peace. However, my mindset has changed, making me happier as I downsize. I love fashion but my vision is constantly changing. I see these amazing closets on Pinterest and I value their organization, not how large they are.
I failed at Project 333, because I have way more then 33 items. However, it doesn't matter to me (at least today). By boxing the spring items (and items that didn't work but I couldn't get rid of) I did organize the pieces. Every time I move items around I see new possibilities. I still have a box by my front door that I take to Goodwill every so often, but the need to replace has softened. Maybe someday I'll get to 33 items but for now I'll be happy in my progress.
For example, I had one pair of lounge pants I no longer needed. I quickly went online to replace them. After putting some cute flannel pants in my online cart I wondered - could I go a week be fine? ...Yes, I was fine. It meant doing more laundry, but I haven't bought new ones yet. I had another pair that were similar. How many items that are similar do you need? - as many as you want, fits in your life and fits in your space, nothing more.
